IAHsummer is a multidisciplinary festival, dedicated to the regeneration of the urban waterfront of San Cataldo, supported by the Municipality of Lecce. Its main aim is to propose alternative processes for the redevelopment of the public spaces in Lecce’s coast line, promoting international collaboration, creative design and hands-on experience. During the days of the festival, Ostello del Sole, the festival’s main venue, was transformed into a creative hub where three big workshops take place, coordinated by renowned young Italian designers.

Architectural design workshop: The regeneration of Ostello del Sole

The aim of this workshop was to elaborate proposals about the transformation of the hostel and its surrounding green area into a point of reference for the local community -as required by the administration’s program- and to improve its relationship with the sea and the public space of the city. The workshop was coordinated by four studios, IOSA, Arcipelago, OKS architetti and Ellevuelle and consisted of an initial concept phase (later presented to all participants), followed by a phase of more detailed design (later exposed to public view). The winning proposal ‘Connectiflow’ was composed by Aikaterini Georgoudi, Fang Yu Liu, Laura Cerliani, Bencherif Moussa and Noemi Zanon. At the end of the festival all projects were exposed in a public open-air exhibition on the avenue A. Vespucci.

Graphic design workshop: Where are you from?

Michele Pastore and Andrea Guccini coordinated the graphic design workshop: the participants created a visual alphabet, reinterpreting the symbols of flags, as elements of communication and means of cultural bonding. The result was a synthesis of letters-ideograms that, once printed on cards featuring San Cataldo, created personalized messages: a unique combination of urban narration enriched with personal storytelling.

Working together! This year’s IAH summer featured the creation of three installations which were erected by three self construction groups.

Self-construction workshop: Vai Oltre, Lumia & Grid [ ]

These three installations, placed along the beach, constitute a series of small scale and light-weight interventions whose aim is to activate the waterfront inviting users to interact with them, offering an alternative urban experience. Both of them reinterpret fundamental notions of architecture (accessibility, transition, views, light, connection and boundaries) and apart from offering visual and spatial continuity between the waterfront and the beach, they also act as landmarks.

– Vai Oltre, the winning proposal of the Self-Construction Competition SCC2019, was placed on the beach and its construction was coordinated by Archistart Studio and Francesco Convertini. It can be viewed as a platform and as a ramp, offering a gradual pass to the beach, favoring at the same time social gathering.
Lumia, a place for meditation and relaxation inspired by fishermen’s traps, can be considered as a ‘functional sculpture’ and was placed on the pier. Its construction was coordinated by Mattia Paco Rizzi of Grriz Studio.
Grid[] is being inspired by the tradition of Luminaria yet incorporates this concept in a contemporary design which acted as a luminous landmark during the evening talk, the presentation of the projects and the closing party on the 7th of August. Archistart studio and Parisi Design were responsible for its construction.
