Alessio Lamarca’s interview for IAH

What was IAH for you?

I joined IAHsummer2015 for fun, with the idea of making a “training holiday”, an experience that would make me meet new people, with very different cultural backgrounds, and at the same time to deal with them within a creative process, sharing ideas and attitudes related to the passion we all participants had in common: architecture.
I must say that the outcomes went far beyond expectations for me. It was fun indeed: but a kind of fun to be taken seriously!
In my specific case I found myself working with a fantastic group, where everyone’s presence was crucial to achieve the result. And I’m quite convinced that if only one among Alexander, Aleksandra, Francesca, Jolta, Margot and Marvin was missing, the outcome would not have been the same. Ours was a slow creative process, rich in intense comparisons and funny moments, which allowed us to discover and to know each other day by day creating that strong connection among us, which then turned out to be a decisive factor.
So, if I had to respond to the question “What was IAH for you?”, I would say that it was an exciting and enriching experience that confirmed once again how awesome and meaningful is to sharing my passion with other people.

As a winner of the workshop "IAHsummer15" tell us about the experience you are living in London at the DosArchitect studio that has selected you among the winners.

It was completely unexpected! I admit that the news of being selected by DOSarchitects for a three month internship initially surprised me a lot. Working abroad has always been my dream in the drawer, even before finishing my studies, so I was very excited about the offer, thinking of, why not, to the future potential  perspectives.
Now, after almost three months, I can start to make a judgement out of this brief experience. The opportunity offered by DOSarchitects was undoubtedly  a great chance  for me to grow professionally and to put myself into a dynamic and stimulating reality like London. From my point of view, I believe that embrace  a new job challenge is like a new start, as though having some experience behind, at least initially, it is always necessary to adapt to the new working environment. This is certainly more complicated when, for the first time, you find yourself having to relate to a context which is totally different from what you always belonged to, that you felt as “yours”. After the first settling period, you reach your equilibrium, and in this sense, a favorable working atmosphere plays a very important role, making your adventure exciting and stimulating you when trying to get it all. However, three months are not enough to comprehend completely the dynamics of a working place, but honestly at the moment it seems conditions are favorable for me to extend this experience …

Tell us the IAH spirit in a few words ..

I think the peculiar characteristic of IAH is its intrinsic experiential value, i.e. the chance you have to build a TEAM and to make everyone feel part of it, alternating working and leisure times that allow the creation of connections in every single team, as well as in the great group of participants overall. So if I think of IAH spirit, three words come up to my mind first: FUN, SHARING, PASSION. I think the success of the IAH project derives from these aspects: the desire to work and have fun at the same time, the ability to stimulate participants to share and confront with each other, and finally the passion for architecture, shown not only by participants, but also by the creators of the workshop that launched this format and have been running this event year by year, adopting the motto “Work hard, but party harder”, which perfectly describes the spirit of IAH indeed.
